Success In Vermont Doesn't Travel West

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (12/05/14)—Concordia came back to earth after their impressive showing in Vermont last weekend. The Cobbers gave up three goals in a span of 4:44 at the end of the first period and the start of the second frame and lost 5-1 at St. Thomas.

The loss snaps a five-game unbeaten streak for the Cobbers. The five goals allowed by Concordia are the most this season. CC is now 5-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play. The Tommies win for the third time in the last four games and are now 4-3-2 in all games and 3-1-1 in the MIAC.

The game was settled in that decisive span of 4:44 at the end of the first period and the start of the second period. St. Thomas scored three goals in that stretch and pushed a 1-0 lead to a four-goal advantage at 4-0. UST scored a pair of goals in the final 3:28 of the opening period and then added their fourth of the game at 1:16 of the second.   

The Cobbers were outshot 18-10 in the first 21:16 of the game but then turned the game around and held a 16-11 advantage in shots on goal in the final 38:44 of play.    

Concordia was able to get a goal back only 40 seconds after the Tommie outburst. Freshman Dalton Mills scored his second goal of the season at the 1:56 mark of the middle frame. Tucker Coborn and Jeremy Johnson earned the assists on CC's lone goal of the game.

St. Thomas would add their fifth goal in the fourth minute of the third period.

The Tommies outshot the Cobbers 29-26 for the game. Garrett Hendrickson and Jordan Christianson led Concordia with four shots each.

The game was played with very few penalties. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play as there were only four penalties called in the entire game.

Alex Reichle started the game in goal for the Cobbers and made 14 saves in the first 21:16 of play. Sophomore Jordyn Kaufer played the final 38:44 and stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced. Tommie goalie Joe Morris made 25 saves and earned his first win of the year.

Concordia and St. Thomas will finish off their series on Saturday, December 6 at 2 p.m.
