Late Power Play Goal Proves Too Much To Overcome

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/06/14)--- The good news is that Concordia only took two penalties in their home opener against Wis.-River Falls. The bad news is that the Cobbers allowed goals on both of the power situations – including the game winner with only 4:03 left in the third period – and lost 4-3.

Concordia never led in the game despite outshooting the Falcons 31-24. The Cobbers carried the play and more "zone" time in their second straight loss of the season. CC is now 1-2 in 2014. River Falls wins their season opener.

The Cobbers gave up the first goal of the game at the 4:54 mark of the opening period and were forced to play catch-up the entire game. Concordia outshot the Falcons 11-4 in the first frame but couldn't crack the scoreboard to tie the game.

CC would finally find the back of the net midway through the second period. Senior captain Andrew Deters scored his first goal of the season when he scored shorthanded at 10:05. Jordie Bancroft was credited with the assist. Unfortunately the 1-1 tie would only last 39-seconds as River Falls took the lead again on the same power play at 10:46.

Concordia freshman scoring sensation Jon Grebosky netted the first of his two goals in the game at the 15-minute mark. His team-leading third goal of the season tied the game for the second time at 2-2.

River Falls had a second answer for the second game-tying goal. Less than 1:30 later the Falcons retook the lead at 3-2. Grebosky then tied the game at 3-3 in the final minute of the second frame. He scored his second goal of the period at 19:36 on assists from Sam Coborn and Jordan Christianson.

The teams then skated through and up-and-down, few whistles, fast-paced third period. The turning point of the game came in the final six minutes of play when the Cobbers took a cross checking penalty in their own zone. River Falls sealed the game with the last goal of the game in the final 30 seconds of the subsequent power play.

Concordia tried to push forward with more urgency but had a couple chances slide just by the post.

The Cobbers held the seven-shot advantage in the game. Grebosky and fellow freshman Zach Doerring had a team-high five shots each.

Sophomore goalie Jordyn Kaufer made 20 saves over the span of the three periods. He has played every minute of the first three games of the season for the Cobbers.

Concordia had two power play chances of their own but failed to capitalize on either man-advantage situation.

The Cobbers will have less than 48 hours to recover before their next game. Concordia will host Wis.-Superior on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.
