Suderman Named Finalist For DIII Player Of The Year

MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/18/14)—Concordia senior captain Caleb Suderman continues to rack up awards, honors and pro contracts. Less than 48 hours after playing in his first professional hockey game Suderman was named one of the eight finalists for the Sid Watson Award which goes to the best player in NCAA Division III as presented by the American Hockey Coaches Association of America (AHCA).

Suderman was named the Co-MVP of the MIAC last week and earned his fourth straight MIAC-Conference Team award. Suderman is joined by fellow Co-MVP of the MIAC Drew Fielding from St. Thomas as one of the top players on the AHCA list.

The Cobbers have never had a player win the AHCA Sid Watson Player of the Year award.

Sponsored by the American Hockey Coaches Association, the Watson Award honors the memory of former Bowdoin College head coach and athletic director Sid Watson. A three-time AHCA Coach of the Year, Watson served Bowdoin for more than 30 years, winning 326 games in 24 seasons as head coach.

The recipient of this year's Watson Award will be announced this Thursday, March 20, during the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Championship student-athlete banquet in Lewiston, Maine.

Suderman is currently playing for the Greenville Road Warriors of the East Coast Hockey League. The Road Warriors are the AA affiliate of the New York Rangers. The Road Warriors have had four players go on to play in the NHL. Nathan Lieuwen made his pro debut for the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. He joins defensemen Marc-Andre Bourdon of the Philadelphia Flyers and Julien Brouillette of the Washington Capitals as well as fellow goaltender Cam Talbot of the New York Rangers as former Road Warriors to reach the NHL.

Suderman finished his career at Concordia with 73 career points which is the most by a defenseman in Cobber men's hockey history. Suderman had 35 goals and 38 assists in his 103 games in maroon and gold.
