One More Extra Time Session To Wait

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/15/14)—It is only fitting that Concordia's unbelievable season of overtime will have to go to extra time to decide if the Cobbers will make the playoffs.

Concordia gave up five straight goals to start their game against St. Mary's and lost the regular-season finale 5-2. The Cobbers will now wait to see if they will make the conference playoffs. CC has their bye weekend next weekend and will need St. Olaf to beat, tie or take Augsburg to overtime in one of the two games between the two teams. The Auggies would need to sweep the Oles in regulation to overtake Concordia for the fifth, and final, MIAC postseason berth.

The two biggest news items on Saturday were the fact that Concordia didn't go to another overtime period and that they gave up more than four goals for only the second time all season long. The Cobbers gave up five consecutive goals to the Cardinals in the first 40:11 of the game and lost for only the second time in the past eight games.

The biggest statistical in the game on Saturday came from shots on goal where the Cobbers held a decided 45-24 edge in shots but only came away with a pair of goals. Concordia had 15 shots in each period but it took them 41 shots to finally beat SMU netminder Phil Heinle.

In the end it was junior Andrew Deters that scored both goals for Concordia in a span of 8:21 in the second half of the third period. Deters broke the shutout at 10:37 when he tallied his eighth goal of the season with an assist going to Jordie Bancroft. He then got CC within three when he scored on the power play at 18:58. Caleb Suderman and Garrett Hendrickson were credited with the assists.

Bancroft's two goals give him a team-leading 31 points to finish off the regular season.  He currently leads the MIAC in total points. The assist for Suderman is his 30th season point and keeps atop the national scoring chart for points by a defenseman.

Concordia goalie Chris Neamonitis made 19 saves while Heinle finished with 43 stops to earn his fourth win of the season.
