Guess What? Another Overtime Game

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/08/14)—It should come as no surprise to Cobber hockey fans that Concordia played another overtime game. For the second straight game and the eighth time in the last 14 contests, the Cobbers needed extra time to decide the league's new bonus point rule.

Concordia and St. Olaf skated to a 2-2 overtime tie on Saturday with the Oles getting an extra point in the standings because of their shootout victory. The Cobbers are now 11-7-5 overall and 5-5-4 in conference play.

For all practical purposes it looked like Concordia would come away with a 2-1 win in regulation. Chris Beede put the Cobbers up by a goal when he netted the team's second goal of the game with just 1:56 left in the final period. Unfortunately for CC, St. Olaf had an answer and was able to tie the game at 2-2 with just under 1-minute left to play in regulation. The Oles scored with 55-seconds left after they had pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker.

Neither team was able to score in overtime despite the teams combining for nine shots in the five-minute extra period.

St. Olaf scored first in the game and then David Velich made it 1-1 with his third goal of the season at the 10:09 mark.

Senior captain Caleb Suderman had an assist on both Cobber goals in the game and upped his scoring total to 26 points. He had two points in both games vs. St. Olaf and has put up two points in three of the team's last four games. Suderman is now tied for the team lead in points with Andrew Deters and both players sit atop the conference scoring chart. Suderman still leads the nation in scoring by a defenseman.

The game was practically a penalty-free affair. Only four penalties were whistled in the 65 minutes of play. Neither team was able to score on the power play. Concordia went 0-for-1 and St. Olaf was held scoreless in their three power play attempts.

The Oles outshot the Cobbers 41-25 for the game with CC netminder Kelly Andrew making 39 saves. St. Olaf goalie Steve Papiciak turned aside 23 shots.

The Cobbers will finish out the regular season next weekend when they host St. Mary's on Fri.-Sat., Feb. 14-15.
