Three Unanswered In The Third Tops Cobbers

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (1/18/14)—In the first 13 games of the year Concordia didn't give up more than three goals in a single game. In the past three games the Cobbers haven't held an opponent to under four goals. CC surrendered five goals for the second consecutive game and lost 5-3 at St. John's.

Concordia gave up three unanswered goals in the third period on their way to their second straight loss. CC is now 9-5-2 in all games and 3-3-1 in the league. The Cobbers went into the Christmas break with an 8-3-1 mark but have stumbled in the New Year to a 1-2-1 record. St. John's, the preseason pick to win the MIAC, is now 9-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the MIAC.

The Cobbers bolted out of the gate in the first period by scoring a pair of goals in the first 10:14 of play. Tucker Coborn got Concordia on the board in the second minute of play when he scored his third goal of the season on assists from Rylan Henley and Jared Maetche. Jordan Christianson doubled the lead at 10:14 when he scored the second even-strength goal of the game.

The Johnnies tied the game with two goals in a span of 3:35 in the final five minutes of the opening frame.

The Cobbers scored the lone goal of the second period when Garrett Hendrickson netted his eight goal of the year at 18:25. Andrew Deters and Jordie Bancroft were credited with the assists. For Hendrickson it was his fifth goal in the last three games. He currently leads the MIAC in scoring by a freshman with eight goals and four points for 12 total points.

Concordia struggled in the third period. CC outshot SJU 20-18 in the first two frames but was then outshot 11-5 in the final frame. St. John's scored a trio of goals in the period with the game-winning goal coming at 14:25 and then adding an empty-net tally with only three-seconds left on the clock.

The Cobbers went 0-for-2 on the power play and while St. John's was 1-for-5 in man-advantage situations.

CC goalie Chris Neamonitis made 24 saves in the game. St. John's goalie Saxton Soley stopped 22 shots.

The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. in St. Cloud.
