A Split In The Conference Opening Weekend

ST. PETER, Minn.  (11/16/13)—Concordia had its two-game winning streak come to an end as the Cobbers gave up a pair of first-period goals and lost 3-1 at Gustavus.

It is the first conference loss of the season for Concordia. CC is now 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league play. The Gusties win for the second time in the past three games and moves to 2-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the MIAC.

The game was won in a span of 5:24 at the end of the first period. The teams traded shots in the first 13 minutes of play before Gustavus scored the opener at 13:17. The Gusties would then add a second goal on the power play at the 18:41 mark.

Neither team was able to score in the second period and then Concordia turned up the pressure and scored in the second minute of the third period. Sophomore Adam Wiertzema netted his second goal of the year on an assist from Andrew Deters. Gustavus would get the all-important "next goal" when they finished off the scoring at 6:30.

The teams skated through a more wide open game on Saturday. The teams combined for 63 shots with the Gusties holding 33-30 edge. Senior defenseman Caleb Suderman had a team-high six shots while Deters added five.

Cobber goalie Chris Neamonitis made 30 saves while Gustie netminder John McLean also had 30 saves as he picked up his third win of the year.
