A Superior Penalty-Killing Performance

SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/09/13)—The usual scoring suspects and a determined penalty-kill unit were the stars in Concordia's 3-2 win at UW-Superior on Saturday. Jordan Christianson and Caleb Suderman scored their team-leading fourth goals and the CC penalty killers held the Yellowjackets to just 1-for-8 on man-advantage situations.

Christianson's fourth goal of the year at 7:25 of the third period proved to be the game winner as Concordia improves to 3-1 on the season. It marks the second time in the past three seasons that the Cobbers have won three of their first four games of the year.

Concordia goalie Chris Neamonitis continues to be a wall in goal. Neamonitis turned aside 37 of the 39 shots he faced and has now stopped 96.0% of the shots he has faced this season. His ability to keep CC in the game until the offense can come up with key goals has been a theme throughout the season.

UW-Superior (0-2-0) got on the board first in the third minute of play in the opening period of play. The Cobbers failed to score in the first frame but then tied the game when they returned the early-goal favor in the second period. Freshman Jeremy Johnson earned his first collegiate goal when he scored at 2:33. Christianson and Garrett Hendrick were credited with the assists.

The Cobbers would take a 2-1 lead midway through the second period when Suderman, an All-American candidate, scored his fourth goal of the year at 10:20. Dan Hrabowych picked up the first of his two assists of the night on the play. The Yellowjackets would tie the game late in the period with a power play goal at 17:19.

Christianson scored the game winner on Concordia's third shot of the final period. Hrabowych and Jordie Bancroft set up the goal. For Hrabowych it was his team-leading seventh point of the season. CC would then hold on for the final 12 minutes of play. Superior put up 10 shots in the final 12 minutes and Neamonitis was able to turn aside all five shots he faced in a frantic last five minutes of play.

The Cobbers were outshot 39-19 for the game. CC missed on both of their power play attempts but held the Yellowjackets to a single goal in their eight attempts. Concordia has given up only two power play scores in 27 chances on the year.

Concordia will continue with their early-season road tour when they open conference play at Gustavus next weekend. The Cobbers will play the Gusties on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.
