Three In The Third Dooms Title Hopes

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (2/23/13)—Concordia gave up three unanswered goals in the third period and lost 5-1 at St. John's in the semifinals of the MIAC playoffs. The Cobbers, who never led in the game, trailed 2-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of play before conceding the game-deciding three-goal streak.

The loss is the first in six games for Concordia who finish the 2012-13 season with a 13-12-1 record.

Concordia  gave up its fourth shorthanded goal of the year to open the scoring midway through the first period. St. John's would open a two-goal lead in the first minute of play in the second period. Their tally at the 13-second mark put SJU up 2-0 and may have been the most important goal of the game.

The Cobbers got their only goal of the night when Dan Hrabowych scored on the power play at 4:43 of the middle frame. Hrabowych's sixth goal of the year was assisted by defenseman Charlie Aus.

The teams would play the final 15 minutes of the second period and the first four of the third period without scoring a goal. The Johnnies' tio of third-period scores started at 4:08 and then continued at the 11:03 mark before finally finishing at 14:41.

Concordia was outshot 37-20 in the game. The biggest difference came in the third period where SJU had a 12-5 edge in shots on goal.

Cobber goalie Chris Neamonitis made 32 saves while St. John's netminder Saxton Soley stopped 19 shots to earn the win.
