Last 35 Minutes Good, First 25 Minutes Not So Much

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/25/13)—The good news for Concordia is that they outscored Gustavus 4-1 in the final 35 minutes of their game on Friday. The bad news is that the Cobbers dug themselves a 6-0 hole in the first 25 minutes and wound up losing 7-4.

The loss is the third straight for Concordia who falls to 8-11-1 overall and 5-6-0 in the MIAC. The Cobbers are now in a tie for fourth place in the league standings. The Gusties remain unbeaten in their final four games and are now 9-6-3 in all games and 3-4-2 in conference play.

Concordia was hoping for a "redo" button after the first 25 minutes of play. The Cobbers gave up three goals in the first period and then three more in the opening 4:47 of the second frame. Somehow CC was able to regroup and put up three goals during the final 15 minutes of play in the middle period. Gustavus reestablished their four-goal lead at the 6:44 mark of the third period before Andrew Deters capped the scoring with the final goal of the game at 15:23.

Four different players scored for Concordia. Adam Wiertzema started the CC scoring attack with his third goal of the year at 6:08 of the second. Caleb Suderman added his fifth goal of the year on the power play at 8:03 and then Brian Kang came away with his sixth goal to bring Concordia within three at the end of the second period.

The Cobbers were outshot 15-10 in the first period but then went on to have a 24-12 edge in shots in the final two periods. Concordia finished with a 34-27 advantage in shots for the game.

Concordia split the goaltending duties. Chris Neamonitis started the game and stopped 13 shots in the first 23:21 of play. Sophomore Glen Gayet finished off the game and made seven saves in his first appearance of the 2012-13 season. Tyler Venne stopped 10 shots in each period and finished the game with 30 saves.

The two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday, Jan 26 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
