Neamonitis Is Next Cobber MIAC Player Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/14/13)—For the second consecutive week, a Cobber men's hockey athlete was named MIAC Player of the Week. Junior goalie Chris Neamonitis earns the award one week after teammate Tucker Coborn won the honor.

It is the second time in his career that Neamonitis has won the conference weekly award.

Neamonitis was the backbone behind Concordia's sweep at Augsburg on Friday and Saturday. It was the first road conference sweep in two years for the Cobbers. CC edged the Auggies 2-1 in the first game and then unleashed their offense on Saturday to come away with a 6-2 victory.

The two wins brings Concordia's overall record to an even 8-8-1 but more importantly, the Cobbers are now 5-3-0 in league play and tied for second place in the conference standings.

Neamonitis stopped 81 shots over the span of the two games. His best stretch during the weekend came in the first period on Friday. He stopped the first six shots in the game before Concordia opened the scoring on their very first shot of the game. He then turned aside the first 20 shots that the Auggies fired on net before allowing the only goal of the game. Neamonitis then finished off the final 28 minutes of the game by making 22 straight saves.

Saturday's game didn't shine the spotlight so directly on Neamonitis since CC scored six goals but it was still the junior netminder that made sure Augsburg wouldn't turn the contest into a high-scoring affair. Neamonitis stopped 39 shots in the second game and made a series-high 19 stops in one period in the second frame.

Neamonitis currently leads all MIAC goalies in save percentage (.941), goals against average (1.89), saves (412), wins (8) and minutes played (825:04).

The Cobbers will now have a stretch of six straight home games.  Concordia will start their three-series home stand when they host St. John's on Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19. Both games will be played at the Moorhead Sports Center.
