Cobbers Return Unanswered-Goal Win

Cobbers Return Unanswered-Goal Win

BLAINE, Minn. (11/17/12)—Less than 24 hours after conceding a pair of unanswered goals and losing by one at Bethel, the Cobbers scored three unanswered goals of their own in the third period and beat the Royals 5-1.

The win gives Concordia a series split and pushes the Cobbers' overall record to 3-4-1. CC is now 2-2-0 in their first four MIAC games. Bethel loses for the first time in conference play and falls to 4-4-0 in all games and 3-1-0 in the MIAC.

Freshman forward Jordie Bancroft led the scoring charge for Concordia. He scored the game's first goal and then started the three-goal stretch in the third period. Bancroft's two-goal game gives him the team lead in goals and points. He now has four goals on the year and seven overall points.  Chris Beede had a goal and an assist to up his goal total to three.

One of the keys in the series finale was the play of the Cobbers' special team's units. Concordia scored a power play goal, add a shorthanded tally and didn't allow the Royals to score in their four man-advantage situations. Bancroft's first goal of the game at 7:07 of the opening period came on the power play. Beede and Chris Williamson earned the assists. The second goal in the third-period unanswered streak was scored while CC was killing off one of their four penalty-kill situations. Brian Kang continued his solid season start by notching his fourth goal of the year at 5:26 of the final frame. That goal came just 20-seconds after Bancraft's second goal of the game and broke the spirit of the Royals.

Concordia and Bethel each put up 24 shots on goal. The Cobbers outshot the Royals by two in both the first and third periods while BU held a four-shot edge in the middle period.

CC goalie Chris Neamonitis made 23 saves to earn his third win of the year. He also lowered his team-leading goals against average to 1.99. Neamonitis also has a 93.9 save percentage in his six games of the season. Bethel netminder Matt Rowe stopped 19 shots.

The Cobbers will now have a play a non-conference game at UW-Superior on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. CC will then have nine days off before returning to MIAC action.
