Cobbers Settle For Tie At Northland

ASHLAND,  Wis. (12/17/11)—Despite outshooting Northland 45-24, Concordia was never able to come up with a game-clinching goal and had to settle for a 2-2 overtime tie on Saturday. The Cobbers received goals from Nick Thielen and Mark Johnson and remained unbeaten in their last three games.

Northland (3-6-2) got on the board first after the Cobbers had killed off the first of two penalties in a 5-on-3 situation. The Lumberjacks took advantage of the second power play and took the 1-0 lead at the 8:52 mark. Concordia finally scored with 3:32 left to play in the first period. After getting turned back in their first 11 shots of the period, Thielen connected on his second goal of the year to tie the score at 1-1. Brian Kang and Michael Benedict were credited with the assists on the play.

Concordia (6-3-3) continued their dominant play in the second period but once again had trouble putting the puck into the net.  Johnson scored his first goal of the year with under three minutes to play in the middle frame.  Once again the Cobbers put up a double-digit shot total in the period before finally getting the reward. Aaron Wheeler and Ben Payne had the assists to help put CC up 2-1.

The Cobbers gave up the game-tying goal midway through the third period. The final period was different than the first two as Concordia tried to hold onto their one-goal lead. After outshooting the Lumberjacks 29-15 through the first two periods, CC held just a 10-9 edge in the third frame.  The Lumberjacks tied the game at the 9:26 mark and then the Cobbers had to kill off another 5-on-3 situation and a 5-on-4 power in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Because of the penalties, Concordia was only able to come up with two shots in the final half of the third period.

The overtime period was all Concordia as they outshot Northland 6-0 and held the puck in the Lumberjacks' defensive end the majority of the 5-minute period.

Cobber goalie Kelly Andrew made 22 saves in the game. Ian Perrier stopped 43 shots for the Lumberjacks.

Concordia was 0-for-3 on the power play while Northland scored once in their four man-advantage situations.

The two teams will finish off their series on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.
