A Much-Needed Split

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/14/12)—Less than 24 hours after stumbling through their series opener with Augsburg, Concordia received goals from four different players and downed the Auggies 4-1. The win gives the Cobbers a split with Augsburg and keeps them in the top 2 of the MIAC standings.

The four goals scored by Concordia matched a season high and is more than they had scored in the previous three games combined. Erick Galt, Braden Rahman, Ben Payne and Nick Thielen all scored their third goals of the year to help the Cobbers move to 8-6-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the MIAC. Augsburg slides to 6-9-0 in all games and 2-4-0 in conference play.

The teams skated for over 18:00 in the first period until Concordia was able to score. Galt opened the scoring at the 18:46. Thielen and Payne grabbed the assists on the first goal. It would be the first of three points on the day for Galt as he added a pair of assists in the second and third periods.

The Cobbers added two goals in the second period to take a 3-0 lead into the final frame. Braden Rahman netted the eventual game-winning goal at 2:51 and then Payne put CC up 3-0 just before the end of the middle period. Galt and Brian Kang were credited with the assists on Rahman's goal and Payne's nugget was of the unassisted variety.

Augsburg would score midway through the final period before Thielen finished off the scoring by posting an empty-net goal at 19:45.

Cobber netminder Chris Neamonitis made 26 saves to earn his fifth win of the year. He is now 4-0-2 against team from the MIAC this season. Justin Lochner turned aside 26 of the 29 shots he faced in the game.

Concordia outshot the Auggies for the second straight game. CC held a 30-27 in shots on goal. Neither team was able to score on the power play. The Cobbers were 0-for-4 while Augsburg went 0-for-2.

Concordia will now hit the road for three straight conference series. The Cobbers will play at St. John's on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21-22 with both games being played at the national Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
