Olson Leads Successful Sunday Surge

SARTELL, Minn. (9/18/22)—Freshman Landon Olson posted a second-place finish at the St. John's Fall Invitational and helped the Cobbers climb into fourth place in the final team standings after a successful Sunday surge.

Olson finished the tournament by shooting identical 71's at the 2-day tournament. His 2-under score of 142 was tied for second place and earned him his first-ever Top 3 finish.

Olson was also a part of the Cobber team that posted a score of 298 on Sunday which moved CC from sixth place after Saturday's round, to a fourth-place finish in the final results. The 298 team score marks the third time in the last four rounds that Concordia has posted a team score under 300.

Olson had three birdies on his card on Sunday, which upped his tournament total to five. Olson also had an eagle on Saturday which gives him at least one eagle in each of his last two tournaments.

Olson led the tournament in scoring on the Par 5 holes. He finished with an average of 4.38 on the Par 5's over the two days. He was also fourth in pars.

Olson's two rounds of 71 tie for the lowest score by a Cobber this season.

Olson leads the team in scoring average this season. He is averaging 73.7 a round over his six rounds this year.   

Fellow freshman Gabe Benson matched Olson's 71 on Sunday as he posted his second straight Top 15 finish. Benson stumbled in the first round, carding a 79, but then rebounded on Sunday to fire the 1-under 71. His 2-day total of 150 earned him a T14 finish.  

Benson only had one birdie on Day 1, but then blistered the course for four birdies on Sunday. He finished the tournament by finishing in a tie for second place on the Par 4 holes in the tournament. He posted an average of 4.05 on the 20 par 4's in the two days.   

Benson is second on the team in average this year. He has played in six rounds and has a 75.2 season average.  

Junior Aaron Shelstad, who played as an individual for the weekend, tied with Benson as the team's No.2 finisher on the weekend. He opened with a 77 and then improved by four strokes to finish at 150 (77-73).

Shelstad was tied for first in the tournament on Par 3 scoring. He played the eight Par 3's in an average of 2.75.

Shelstad's Top 15 finish helped him move into third place on the team's scoring list this year. He has played in four rounds and has an average of 76.5.   

Junior Justin Lamp was the No.4 finisher for the Cobbers. He went out in 76 on Saturday, and then came home with a 77 on Day 2. His final total of 153 put him into 25th-place in the final individual standings.

Lamp recorded six birdies over the weekend, including four on Sunday.

Mason Plante, who was the other individual golfer for CC at the tourney, matched Lamp's total of 150. He started with a 73 and then finished with an 80.

Plante is currently tied for fourth on the team in scoring with a 77.0 season average.

UP NEXT: Concordia will compete in the annual Twin Cities Classic next weekend. The Cobbers will open play in the 3-day tournament hosted by Gustavus at the Elk River CC on Saturday, Sept. 24.
