Opheim Leads Cobbers In Season Opener

HAM LAKE, Minn. (9/05/21)---Senior Mason Opheim started his super senior season by posting another Top 10 finish and leading Concordia to a fourth-place at the St. John's Invitational at Majestic Oaks GC.

The Cobbers shot a team score of 308 on Saturday in the opening round of the year. They rebounded on Sunday with a 301 to finish at 609. The 609 total is seven shots better than their total from the same tournament in 2019 when they finished in fifth place.

Opheim put up a 2-day total of 148 and was ninth in the final individual standings. He opened with a 75 on Saturday and then rebounded to shoot a 1-over 73 on Sunday. Opheim has now finished in the Top in four of the past five tournaments. He also improved 13 strokes over his total in the same tournament in his junior season in 2019.

Freshman Mason Plante made the biggest improvement from Day 1 to Day 2 of any Cobber. Plante started his college career with an 80 but then settled his nerves and came home in 73 on Sunday. His 73 tied Opheim's Day 2 total for the low round of the weekend by a CC golfer. Plante's total of 153 was good for a tie for 17th place.

Concordia had a trio of veterans tie at 155 for the weekend. Sophomore Ryan Jenson went 77-78 while seniors Nate Longtin (78-77) and Tyler Bossert (79-76) both improved with their Sunday scores.

UP NEXT: Concordia will head to Bemidji for their next multi-team tournament. The Cobbers will compete in the Bemidji State Invitational on Sept. 13-14 at the Bemidji Town & Country Club.
