Wrong Half To Lead

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/03/20)—The numbers on the scoresheet were almost identical for Concordia's conference make-up game with Hamline. Unfortunately for the Cobbers the difference came in the placement of the two halves.

Concordia controlled the first half, never trailed and led by two points at the break. The Pipers then took over in the second half, led for all but 1:05 and had a 75-68 lead when the score mattered most – at the end of the 40-minutes of play.

The key in the game was that the Cobbers could never put an extended point streak to pull away from Hamline while the Pipers used a 11-3 run in the second half to post the only double-digit lead of the game.

The Cobbers' best run in the second half came in the final two minutes of play when they scored four straight points to cut the HU lead to three points at 65-62 with 1:20 to play. Hamline then countered with the next five points to put the game out of reach with an 8-point margin with only 21-seconds left to play.

Junior guard Bryden Urie led Concordia by tying his career high with 25 points. He went 11-for-18 from the floor and made a pair of 3-pointers to post his third 20-plus point game of the season.

Senior Tommy Schyma was the only other CC player with more than eight points in the game. He finished with 10 points and had a team-high six rebounds.   

Jacob Fredrickson also had six rebounds while Cam Arndt added seven points – 6 of which came in the first half.

The team stat line was well balanced. Concordia made 24 field goals as compared to 25 for Hamline. CC held a 4-3 edge in 3-pointers made and a 25-24 advantage in rebounds.

The slight differences came at the free throw line and around the basket. The Pipers made six more foul shots and had a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint.

INSIDE STAT INFO: Bryden Urie now has scored at least 20 points on nine occasions in his Cobber career. The reason that the stat makes the ISI is because his 20-point games are evenly distributed over his three seasons. He now has three 20-point games in each year.

UP NEXT: Concordia will head to the St. Paul area for the next two games. The Cobbers will play at Bethel on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 5:45 p.m. and then square off against No.4-ranked St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
