A Special Senior Day Comeback

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/01/20)---Senior Tommy Schyma made an instant, and dramatic, impact on the annual Senior Day game for the Cobbers.

Schyma, who hadn't played in a game since Dec. 14 after suffering a lower leg injury over the Christmas holiday break, drained his very first shot of the game – a 3-pointer in the first 30-seconds of play – and went on to score a team-high 25 points and grab a game-high 10 rebounds in Concordia's 78-62 loss to St. Mary's.

Schyma also hit his second 3-point attempt of the game to stake the Cobbers to an early 8-0 lead. Unfortunately the comeback story of the year would be derailed by an 19-1 run by the Cardinals that turned a 20-20 game with 11:13 left in the first half into an 18-point deficit with 5:08 left in the opening period of play.

The Cobbers would cut the lead to 11 at the half and get to within seven points by starting the second half on a 4-0 run but St. Mary's would then post a 15-2 streak and keep the lead in double digits for the remainder of the game.

Schyma provided an instant spark for the Cobber offense as he went 4-for-9 from outside the arc, 7-for-16 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. His 25/10 stat line earns him the first double-double of his season and fifth of his career.

Concordia shot 38.9% (21-for-54) from the floor and 27.8% (5-for-18) from 3-point range for the game. The Cobbers attempted 22 free throws as opposed to 12 for the Cardinals which marked the first time in eight games that CC has been to the line more times than their opponent. Concordia was 15-for-22 (68.2%) from the line on Saturday.

St. Mary's won the game from long distance where they knocked down 13 long balls and shot 44.8% (13-for-29) from 3-point range.

Fellow senior John Reiten was the only other Cobber in double digits in scoring. He went 5-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line and finished with 14 points. He also hauled down six boards.

INSIDE STAT INFO: The 25-point game from Tommy Schyma marks the fourth time this season that a Cobber player has scored at least 25 points in a game. Schyma owns three of those 25-point games with the other two coming against Minn.-Morris (27) and Wis.-Superior (25) in the first two games of the year. Freshman Jackson Jangula owns the other 25-point game as he put up 26 against St. Scholastica on Nov. 16.    
    
UP NEXT: Concordia have a short turnaround before hosting their next game. The Cobbers will play Hamline on Monday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. in the makeup from a game that was originally scheduled on Jan. 18 but was postponed due to a winter storm.
