Cobbers Drop Road Game In Northfield

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/29/20)---A 22-4 run midway through the first half proved to be the difference in the Cobbers' game at Carleton. Concordia was in a tight game with the Knights in the first nine minutes of play but then the 18-point stretch in favor of Carleton forced the Cobbers to chase a double-digit deficit for the remainder of the contest.

Concordia trailed by the same 18 points at the break at 47-25 and then was within a single point of Carleton in the second half and lost 83-60.

The loss drops the Cobbers' overall record to 2-16 in all games and 0-13 in the MIAC. Carleton ends its 4-game losing streak and goes to 8-11 and 5-9 in conference play this season.

Besides the decisive stretch in the first half the biggest discrepancy in the game came at the free throw line where Carleton shot 43 free throws as opposed to 19 for the Cobbers. The Knights went 33-fof-43 (76.7%) from the foul line while Concordia was 16-for-19 (84.2%).

Cobber freshman Braeton Motschenbacher continued his solid scoring touch. The Fargo Davies product was 7-for-13 from the floor, 5-for-5 from the free throw line and finished with a career-high 20 points. He has now scored in double figures in three of the last four games.

Junior guard Bryden Urie was the only other Concordia player with more than six points in the game. Urie was also perfect from the foul line and finished with 12 points. He now has nine double-digit scoring games this year.

Freshman Josh Jeziorski came away with a game-high nine rebounds in 20 minutes of play. The nine boards is also a career high for Jeziorski. 

The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 36.4% (20-for-55) from the floor and 22.2% (4-for-18) from outside the arc. Carleton also made four shots from 3-point range (4-for-14/28.6%) but made their hay driving to the basket and finished by making 45.1% (23-for-51) of their shots from the floor.

The Knights held a 37-39 edge in rebounds and a 36-30 advantage in points in the paint.

INSIDE STAT INFO: The 43 free throws attempted by Carleton are the most by a Cobber opponent in a single game since the 2016 season when the Knights had 45 free throws against the Cobbers on Jan. 6.  

UP NEXT: Concordia will return to Moorhead for a 2-game homestand. The Cobbers will host St. Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. and then Hamline on Monday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. The game against the Pipers is the rescheduled game from Jan. 18 which was postponed due to a winter storm.
