2nd-Half Stretch Spoils MIAC Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/23/19)---Concordia and Augsburg went back-an-forth throughout the first half and the start of the second period but then a 9-0 run by the Auggies proved to be the difference maker as the Cobbers fell 75-55 in the MIAC opener.

Concordia trailed by a single point at the break and was within striking distance when John Reiten connected on a jumper to cut the lead to five points at 46-41 with 11:40 to play. Augsburg then scored the next nine points in the game to push the lead to 14 points and was able to hold on to the double-digit margin for the final nine minutes of play.

The loss ends Concordia's 2-game win streak. The Cobbers are now 2-3 overall. Augsburg srarts the season with two straight wins and is now 2-0 in all games.

The biggest shooting statistical difference came from field goals made. The Cobbers were within one in 3-point field goals but the Auggies connected on eight more field goals during the game.

Concordia shot 38.5% (20-for-52) from the floor and 33.3% (6-for-18) from outside the arc. Augsburg connected on 48.3% (28-for-58) of their attempts from the field and 38.9% (7-for-18) from 3-point range.

The Cobbers had one fewer turnover in the game while the Auggies had a 37-31 edge in rebounds.

Seniors Tommy Schyma and Reiten combined for 24 points. Schyma had a team-high 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Reiten added 11 points and three rebounds.

Freshman Camden Arndt had six rebounds and five points.

UP NEXT: Concordia will hit the road for its next conference game. The Cobbers will travel to St. Peter to take on Gustavus on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5:15 p.m.
