Cobbers Run Out Of Gas Against UW-River Falls

SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/25/12)—Concordia watched a 16-point lead evaporate in the final 5:20 of the second half against UW-River Falls and wound up losing 90-84 in overtime on Sunday. The Cobbers also had a five-point lead with 10-seconds to play but then watched the Falcons can a pair of 3-point field goals – with the final long-range shot coming with only :02 left on the clock – to send the game into overtime.

It was the second overtime game in less than 18 hours for Concordia - who beat UW-Superior 95-90 in a double overtime thriller on Saturday night. The loss, in the team's penultimate non-conference game of the season, drops the Cobbers' season record to 2-2 heading into MIAC play. UW-River Falls wins for the second straight game and evens their season mark at 2-2.

Concordia did everything right for the first 34:40 of the game as they built up 65-49 lead with 5:50 to play. That's when the Falcons' rally started as they went on a 14-2 run and cut the margin to four points at 67-63 with 2:40 to play. The Cobbers were able to trade baskets for the next two minutes and held a 71-66 lead with 20-seconds to play. Unfortunately for CC, River Falls would connect on a pair of 3-point field goals while Concordia would miss on a free throw attempt that would have put the game out of reach. The Falcons then tied the game with a 3-pointer with just :02-seconds left to go in regulation.

The Cobbers were reeling heading into the overtime session and gave up nine of the first 11 points in the 5-minute extra period. CC was only able to get to within four points as River Falls connected on their final six free throws and 10 of their 12 foul shots in overtime.

The free throw line played a huge role in the game with Concordia making 12 of their 20 (60.0%) foul attempts as compared to 31-of-41 (75.6%) for River Falls.

The other statistical categories were virtually even with the Cobbers holding a 38-36 edge in rebounding and committing two fewer turnovers (15-13).  Both teams shot around 47.0% from the floor. River Falls had one more 3-point field goal in the game (8-7).

Concordia was led by Ebo Nana-Kweson who came within a single rebound of posting his second straight double-double. He finished with a game-high 19 points and collected nine rebounds. Senior center Jason Huus picked up his first double-double of the year. He scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Dewon McKenzie had a season-high seven assists. Aaron Lindahl and Scott Flotterud both came off the bench to add 13 points each.

The Cobbers will open the 2012-13 conference schedule when they host Bethel on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7:45 p.m.
