A 3-Point Festival

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/21/12)—Concordia sank 13 3-point field goals and shot 54.4% from the floor en route to an 89-64 win over St. John’s on Saturday.  Cobber junior Andrew Martinson led the offensive assault. Martinson was 6-for-7 from behind the arc and finished with a career-high 27 points.  

It is the second straight win for the Cobbers and second straight game they have scored over 80 points. CC finished the day 13-for-26 from behind the arc. The 13 made shots from 3-point range is two shy of the school record of 15 set in 2003 against Mayville State. Martinson’s six made long-range shots is the third highest in school history.

Concordia made their first three shots from behind the arc and connected on seven of their first seven shots from the floor as they bolted to a 23-6 lead in the opening 7:30 of the game. The Cobbers would never let the Johnnies get to within 10 points and went on to claim the 25-point victory. CC is now 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the MIAC. The Cobbers continue to inch closer to the top 6 in the league standings. Concordia is now only a half game behind SJU in the conference standings for the sixth, and final, playoff spot. St. John’s is 5-6 in league play and 9-7 in all games.

Led by Martinson’s 27 points, the Cobbers finished with four players in double digits in points. Concordia also had five players knock down at least one 3-point field goal. Ebo Nana-Kweson went 2-for-4 from behind the arc and had 15 points. Brandon Fisher was also 2-for-4 from long range on his way to 14 points. He also had a team-high eight rebounds. Center Jason Huus was the only CC starter who did not make a 3-point basket. He finished with 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.

St. John’s had three players with 10 or more points. Aaron Barmore was 5-for-7 from the floor and had a team-high 14 points. Seth Marx added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The biggest statistical advantage came in rebounds. The Cobbers outrebounded St. John’s 35-27 for the game and also came away with a 21-9 edge in second-chance points.

Concordia will now have their biggest break since the Christmas holiday. The Cobbers will have a full week off before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they host Augsburg at 3
