Concordia To Celebrate 40th Aniversary of Title IX
MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/26/12)—Concordia will
pay tribute to the 40th anniversary of Title IX by
hosting a celebration of 40 years of women’s college
athletics on Sunday, Dec. 2 starting at 5 p.m. in Memorial
Auditorium.
The celebration will feature speakers, an alumni panel, a parade
of uniforms from the history of Cobber women’s athletics as
well as a prize drawing and video of the history of Concordia
women’s athletics.
The doors to Memorial Auditorium will open at 5 p.m. and fans,
family and friends can walk around the arena and look at the
display panels showcasing the different eras of Cobber
women’s athletics. There will also be a Wall of Fame of
Concordia women's athletes and coaches.
The official Title IX celebration program will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The program will have guest speakers followed by a parade of past
Cobber women’s athletic uniforms and then an alumni panel.
The alumni panel will feature Concordia Hall of Fame members
Collette Folstad, Dr. Armin
Pipho, Coral (Beske) Lunde and
Duane Siverson as well as former coaches and
athletes. The program will finish with a prize drawing and then a
video of the history of Cobber women's athletics.
The 40th anniversary of the Title IX decision was on
June 23, 2012 with many colleges and universities sponsoring
celebration events throughout the 2012 calendar year. Signed into
law by President Nixon on June 23, 1972, the Higher Education Act
– and specifically its Title IX provision – gave equal
access to female and males in any federally assisted program. But
without a doubt, its greatest effect has been felt in high school
and collegiate athletics.
Since its inception, Title IX has spurred exponential growth in
opportunities for females in both interscholastic and
intercollegiate athletics, helping to build the athletic world we
know today.
The Concordia celebration of the 40th anniversary of
Title IX is free of charge and the general public is welcome to
attend.
