Spring Semester Sports Plan Announced

MOORHEAD, Minn. ---The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced the league-wide plan for the spring semester which includes both spring and fall athletic teams.

The MIAC is planning for a full spring-sport season, including conference championships for baseball, softball, tennis, golf, and outdoor track and field. For postponed fall sports competing in the spring, soccer and volleyball will participate in a condensed schedule, while cross country and football teams will have the autonomy to schedule contests as each institution sees fit. There will not be conference championships for fall sports this spring.

Per the MIAC announcement, Concordia’s traditional spring sports of baseball, softball, tennis, golf, and outdoor track and field will compete in a regular competition schedule which will hopefully progress towards postseason and conference championship experiences.

The league also announced that there will be no conference schedule for football or cross country and that any competitions between member schools would not count in MIAC record books.

Following the conference’s announcement, Cobber football head coach Terry Horan announced that Concordia will concentrate on a regular schedule of practices and an intrasquad scrimmage at the end of the shortened season.

“I believe this is in the best interest of our student/athletes,” Horan said. “Whenever we make decisions at this level it is always what is best for the student/athletes. The ability to hold a consistent schedule of practices without worrying about outside competition adding a threat of introducing positive COVID-19 tests is a major part of this decision. It will also give our student/athletes the best chance for an injury-free spring practice season as we prepare for the fall.”

The decision to concentrate on practices and an intrasquad scrimmage for Concordia will also allow 2-sport student/athletes who compete in the spring to participate in competitions that have the ability to compete for a championship.

“Concordia has always prided itself on the ability for student/athletes to compete in multiple sports.,” Concordia Athletic Director Rachel Bergeson said. “We have many current student/athletes that participate in a fall and spring sport and we want to be able to give those student/athletes the chance to compete in a complete regular-season schedule. This is especially important after those athletes weren’t able to have a ‘normal’ season after last spring’s abrupt shutdown.”

Schedules for the spring and fall sports teams that will be participating in competitions will be released on the Cobber athletics website as they are made available.
