Scheels Athletes Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/11/16)— A pair of senior captains used their veteran experience to earn this week’s Scheels Cobber Athlete of the Week honors. Hank Van Liew and Emily Grace Olson had standout performances over the weekend to earn this week’s award.

Van Liew and Olson both excelled under the toughest competition and were at their peak to help their teams post memorable competitions under a bright spotlight. Van Liew had a team-high seven solo tackles during the Cobber football team’s thrilling Homecoming game with No.4-ranked St. Thomas while Olson had a career-best performance at the MIAC Championship Meet.

Scheels is once again pleased to sponsor the Cobber Athletes of the Week award.  Each week the Concordia sports information department will choose a deserving Cobber male and female athlete of the week.

MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
HANK VAN LIEW – Sr., Snoqualmie, Wash./Mount Si HS
Van Liew was at his best when his team needed him most. Midway through the fourth quarter with national-ranked St. Thomas on the Cobbers’ 1-yard line, Van Liew came up with the solo hit of the game as he stepped into the hole and stopped the Tommie running back on the 1-foot line. Van Liew’s wall-like presence helped Concordia come up with a memorable goal line stand and give CC a chance to take the lead late in the game.

Van Liew finished the game with a team-high seven solo tackles, 2.0 tackles for a loss and finished with 11 total tackles. It marked the third time this season that Van Liew has recorded at least 10 tackles in a game.

He now has 18 solo and 28 assisted tackles for 46 total tackles. He is currently in the Top 10 in the MIAC in total tackles, solo tackles, assisted tackles and tackles per game.

WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
EMILY GRACE OLSON, Sr., Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS
Olson closed out her collegiate conference career by recording her best three-day total at the MIAC Championship Meet.

Olson saved her best for last as she fired the round of her MIAC career on Monday during Day 3 at the conference meet. She finished with an 81 which was in the Top 15 of all golfers for the day. Olson ended the tournament with a total of 260 which was good for 27th place.

Olson had two consistent rounds on Saturday and Sunday and then recorded the best 18-hole score of college career at the conference meet. Olson started with an 89, climbed one stroke to a 90 on Day 2 and then closed with a blistering 81 on Monday. The 81 was the best score of any Concordia player at the meet during the three days and her lowest league meet score by three shots.

Olson's previous low total at the league meet came last year when she scored a 266.
