MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/28/16)--- In honor of International Vegetarian Week the NCAA named Concordia’s Kernel Cobb as the top meatless mascot in all of college sports.

The rankings encompassed NCAA Division I, II and III schools. Kernel Cobb prevailed over mascots from large universities as well as similar small colleges.

The NCAA stated in its case for The Kernel to be No.1 by stating, “this anthropomorphic vegetable represents the most popular, and important, crops in the world.”    

The No.1 ranking continues a trend of the Cobbers being placed at the top of lists when it comes to unique and interesting college nicknames. Concordia has also been mentioned in lists compiled by such national media as ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

Concordia received the top pick in the nation from the NCAA as they beat out the No.2 mascot –Otto the Orange from Division I Syracuse University in New York. The other mascots mentioned in the Top 5 by the NCAA were Brutus Buckeye from THE Ohio State University, The Fighting Okras from Division II Delta State University in Mississippi and WuShock the bundle of wheat from Wichita State.
