5 Questions: Jeff Bretherton

5 Questions: Jeff Bretherton

The Cobber Sports Information department caught up with new Athletic Director Jeff Bretherton and asked him five questions about his playing days at St. John's, what he is excited about being at Concordia, what he thinks about Concordia, one of his mentors and also the status of his wardrobe.

1. What is a fond memory you have from your playing days as a Division III athlete?
It is hard to isolate just one memory from playing.  I was blessed to have great teammates and fantastic coaches that instilled a culture of winning the right way.  Our teams were successful, but the relationships I established created my best friendships that are still in place today.

2. Why are you excited about becoming the new Athletic Director at Concordia?
I believe Concordia is uniquely positioned to take the next step and grow athletically.  The MIAC is a premier NCAA Division III conference with several teams that compete at the highest levels in the country.  Helping our student athletes and coaches strive toward their goals of winning MIAC Championships and competing nationally is something that I am very passionate about.  Athletic success can truly be a catalyst that enhances the entire college community.

3. After having played and coached against Concordia - what comes to mind when you think about Concordia athletic teams?
I have always believed Concordia to have some of the best coached, hardest playing and athletic teams I competed against.  They are fundamentally sound in every sport.  I would also add that sportsmanship is central to everything they do and that has left an incredible impression on me.  It was one of the core reasons that led to my decision to apply for this position.

4. Who is one of the people you admire most in your life?
I have been fortunate to have been mentored and supported by a number of people athletically and professionally.  In terms of impact and admiration, I would be remiss if I didn't identify John Gagliardi from St. John's.  He was so far ahead of his time in how he coached, how he related to his players and the length of time he was successful. I was blessed to have been a small part of that.

5. How much maroon and gold do you own in your wardrobe?
I own a few items that are maroon, but they all say either Montana or Griz.  I would imagine that my Concordia wardrobe will increase rather rapidly.
