Scheels Cobber Athletes Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/27/15)—A pair of seniors led their teams to wins last week to earn Scheels Cobber Athletes of the Week. Men’s soccer player Dam Adegunle and volleyball player Heather Beaner were named the most winners of the weekly award sponsored by Scheels Sporting Goods stores.

Scheels is pleased to congratulate the Cobber Athletes of the Week award. Each week the Concordia sports information department will choose a deserving Cobber male and female athlete of the week.

Scheels has been a longtime supporter of Concordia athletics and is excited to continue their showcasing of the great passion that Cobber athletes bring to the game. Like Cobber athletes, Scheels has a long tradition of quality commitment to athletics. The first Scheels store was opened in 1902 and throughout the years the company has backed local athletic programs. Today, Scheels is a 25-store operation with stores in 10 states and was recently voted the best sporting goods store by Sports Illustrated Kids magazine.    

MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
DAMI ADEGUNLE
– Sr. Winnipeg, Man./St. Paul’s HS
Dami Adegunle had two goals and two assists in the Cobbers’ two games during the past week.

The highlight of the week came on Sunday when he scored the game-winning goal in Concordia’s 4-1 win over Minn.-Morris. Adegunle also had two goals in the game as he was on the score sheet for three of the team’s four goals. He finished the game with a team-high three shots.  

Adegunle also had the only goal in Concordia’s one-goal loss at Bethel on Saturday.

Adegunle had a total of six points in the two games and is now third on the team in scoring with three goals and four assists for 10 points. All three stat totals are career highs for Adegunle.

WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
HEATHER BEANER
– Sr. Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt HS
Heather Beaner had two stellar matches in helping Concordia earn its sixth conference win of the season, a victory total that all but assured the Cobbers a spot in the MIAC playoffs.

Beaner’s biggest contribution of the week came in Concordia’s must-win over Carleton. Beaner hit .250 in the match was tops for any starter in the three-set win. The Cobbers sept the Knights 25-15, 25-16 and 25-22 in a match that feature teams who were tied in the league standings with four losses each.

Beaner finished the match with five kills, three digs and three blocks as she anchored the middle of the  Concordia front line.

Beaner had the second highest attack percentage in Saturday’s thrilling 3-2 loss to league-leading Gustavus. Beaner hit .053 and finished with three kills to go along with six digs and a pair of blocks.

Beaner currently leads the Cobbers in attack percentage and blocks. She is hitting .234 for the season and has 71 blocks. She is also third on the team in kills with 147 winners. Her attack percentage, block and kill totals are all career highs for Beaner.
