Scheels Cobber Athletes Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/18/15)—One student/athlete earned his first award of the week while another earned her third honor as a pair of Concordia winter sports athletes were named this week’s Scheels Cobber Athletes of the Week.

Sophomore wrestler Jakob Stageberg (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) won the Dakota Wesleyan Open 125-lb weight class championship while junior women’s hockey goalie Andrea Klug (West Fargo, N.D.) recorded back-to-back shutouts over St. Benedict to earn this week’s Scheels honor.

Scheels is pleased to congratulate the Cobber Athletes of the Week award winners. Each week the Concordia sports information department will choose a deserving Cobber male and female athlete of the week.

Scheels has been a longtime supporter of Concordia athletics and is excited to continue their showcasing of the great passion that Cobber athletes bring to the game. Like Cobber athletes, Scheels has a long tradition of quality commitment to athletics. The first Scheels store was opened in 1902 and throughout the years the company has backed local athletic programs. Today, Scheels is a 25-store operation with stores in 10 states and was recently voted the best sporting goods store by Sports Illustrated Kids magazine.

Stageberg was a perfect 5-0 at the highly-competitive Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday. On his path to the title at 125 he beat a pair of wrestlers from the No.1 ranked team in NAIA and also scored a pin fall in the championship match.

Stageberg, who qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet last year as a freshman, is now 10-2 on the season and has posted a pair of top 5 finishes in the first two multi-team meets of the year. In the first meet of the year he wrestled an unbelievable seven matches in one day.

Stageberg will look to continue his early-season success when he competes as part of the Cobber contingent at the season-opening dual meet against MSU Moorhead on Wednesday, Nov. 18 and then in the annual Finn Grinaker Cobber Open on Saturday, Nov. 21.

The awards just keep pouring in for Klug who earlier in the week was named the MIAC Player of the Week and then yesterday became the first MIAC player to earn D3hockey.com National Team of the Week honors.

Klug stopped all 56 shots she faced in the Cobbers' two wins over the Blazers on the opening weekend of the MIAC season. The two victories helped Concordia jump out to a tie for the lead in the MIAC standings. The Cobbers are now 2-2-0 in all games after having dropped a pair of one-goal decisions to No.10-ranked Wis.-Stevens Point. With the two shutouts, Klug lowered her season goals against average to 1.68 and raised her save percentage to 94.4%. She is currently tied for fifth in all of Division III in shutouts on the season and is also in the top 25 in both GAA and save percentage.
