Stuffed In St. Peter

STORY LINE: Concordia had five turnovers, fell behind Gustavus 27-0 late in the second quarter and lost 27-14 to the Gusties in St. Peter. The Cobbers gave up touchdowns on four of five possessions in the first and second quarters as they lost for the second straight game.

RECORDS: Concordia is now 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC. Gustavus improves to 2-3 in all games and 1-2 in conference play.

TURNOVER TROUBLE: Concordia lost three fumbles and had a pair of passes picked off on Saturday. The Cobbers have had nine turnovers in the last two games. In Concordia's three wins they have a total of two turnnovers while in their three losses they have 11 miscues.

GROUNDED GAME: The Cobbers rushed for only 20 yards against the Gusties. That is a season low total and the fewest rushing yards since the final game of the 2000 season. Concordia's 23 rushing attempts in the game is also the fewest this year.

TAKEAWAY TIME: Concordia's Black Shirt defense picked off a pair of passes and recovered a fumble on the day. The Cobbers have now come up with 13 takeaways (4, fumbles, 9 interceptions) on the season which is tied for third most in the MIAC. Their nine "picks" are also tied for third most.

SCHMITZ SHINES: Cobber freshman linebacker Nolan Schmitz came up with the highlight play of the game when he stepped in front of a Gustavus pass on the Concordia 10-yard line and then raced 84 yards to the Gustie 6-yard-line before being forced out of bounds. Schmitz' first collegiate interception would lead to the Cobbers' first score of the game.

SAM STANDS OUT: Junior linebacker Sam Michel had his best game in maroon and gold. Michel came away with 19 total tackles on the day. He had two solo tackles and helped out on 17 others. He entered the game with 14 tackles in the first five games of 2018.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a two-week break to rest, heal up and get ready for their next game. The Cobbers have their bye week on Oct. 13 and then return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 when they play at Bethel at 1 p.m.
