Welsh Earns MIAC Weekly Honors

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/17/18)---Concordia senior defensive end Noah Welsh was named the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his career performance in the Cobbers MIAC-opening win at Augsburg.

He becomes the first Cobber player to earn the conference weekly award this season.  

Welsh led the Cobber defense with career-high totals in sacks and tackles. He finished the game with 2.5 sacks and 7.0 tackles. His dominance on the line helped Concordia hold Augsburg to 200 total yards of offense after the Auggies entered the game in the Top 3 of the MIAC in yards per game.

Welsh's career game has highlighted his outstanding senior season. He is second on the team in tackles this year. He has seven solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles for a 18 total tackles. His 18 tackles are three more than he had in all of last season.

Welsh also recorded 2.5 sacks which is the most in a single game by a Cobber player since the 2011 season when Aaron Schindler recorded 3.0 sacks against Valley City State on Sept. 11.

Welsh now has 4.5 sacks on the season which leads the MIAC and is tied for the lead in Division III. His 4.5 sack total is already the most in a single season in his career. Welsh entered the year with 3.0 total sacks in his previous three seasons in maroon and gold.

Welsh will look to continue his stout senior season when the Cobbers host Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
