Another 50-Plus Record Recruiting Class

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/29/18)---Head coach Terry Horan continues to add to his legacy as a top-tier recruiter. After consecutive 50-plus recruiting classes Horan announced the largest group in the history of the program.

Horan will have 55 fresh faces for the 2018 season as the class of 2022 is the largest in the history of the program. The incoming class is two larger than the 53 Horan brought to campus in 2016. Last year Concordia featured 50 first-year players.

"The tradition and academic strength of the college continues to draw large numbers of recruits to look at Concordia as a place to continue their athletic and intellectual growth," said Horan. "It is an exciting time for the program and the college as we continue to post quality incoming classes."

Concordia continued to excel in recruiting student/athletes from Minnesota and North Dakota. The Cobbers will have 42 first-year players from the two adjoining states.

"Local and area kids have always been the backbone of our recruiting classes," added Horan. "You look at the great teams we have had and the core of those teams are from Minnesota and North Dakota."

Concordia is coming off a year where they went 8-2 in all games and finished 6-2 in MIAC play. The eight wins mark the fourth time in the past six years that Concordia has eight victories in a single season. It is also the fifth time during that six-year stretch that CC has won six league games. The Cobbers are now 46-14 in all games in the last six seasons and 35-13 in conference games. Concordia finished in third place in the final league standings and has now posted a Top 3 MIAC finish in six straight seasons.

The record-setting number of recruits can be linked to the amount of student/athletes from outside the Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and South Dakota area. The Cobbers have 11 recruits from non-traditional areas for Concordia. The incoming class will have four student/athletes from Arizona as well as two from Louisiana. CC will feature one student/aathlete from each of Colorado, Nevada, Texas and Washington as well as an international recruit from Canada.

"I am very excited about the way our numbers from outside the area has jumped up," Horan said. "The story of Concordia is starting to reach all over the country and that is in large part to our assistants who have done an incredible job of expanding our recruiting base."

A closer look at position breakdown of the 55 Cobber recruits shows that the offensive line and linebacker are the two most populated positions. By position group the class of 2022 includes 11 offensive lineman, 10 linebackers, nine wide receivers, seven defensive backs, five defensive lineman, four fullbacks, four running backs, three quarterbacks and two tight ends.

Concordia will have the same non-conference opponents to start the 2018 as they did in 2017 when they went 8-2 but the locations will be flipped. The Cobbers will host Neb. Wesleyan on Sept. 1 and then travel to Whitewater to play 6-time national champion Wis.-Whitewater on Sept. 8. CC downed the Prairie Wolves 34-14 in Lincoln and then recorded a 25-17 victory over Whitewater in the 2017 home opener.

The Cobbers will open play in the MIAC when they play at Augsburg on Saturday, Sept. 15.
