Back-To-Back 50-Plus Recruiting Class

Back-To-Back 50-Plus Recruiting Class

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/11/17)---For the second straight season Concordia head coach Terry Horan will have over 50 incoming freshman in preseason training camp in August. Horan released the 2017 Cobber recruiting class which includes 50 new student/athletes for the upcoming season.

"To have one class that was 50-plus was exciting for our staff but to have back-to-back classes with over 50 players is a testimony to the college and our program," said Horan. "The football program is in great shape with all the young talent we have added in the past two seasons."

Concordia saw its numbers of incoming recruits increase in the state of Minnesota. After getting into the 30's for in-state recruits last year, the Cobbers closed the border and have 38 student/athletes from Minnesota.

"The tradition of our program has helped recruit potential student/athletes from around the Red River Valley as well as the entire state," added Horan. "It is becoming a domino effect where kids know players on the current team, they get interested about hearing the great things happening in the program and they want to check it out for themselves."

Concordia's success on the recruiting trail follows their fifth consecutive Top 3 finish in the MIAC standings. The Cobbers went 7-3 overall in 2016 and 6-2 in league play. The six MIAC wins marks the fourth time in the last five years Concordia has recorded at least six victories against conference opponents.

The breakdown of the 50 future Cobbers includes 11 linebackers and 10 defensive backs, eight offensive lineman, eight running backs, five wide receivers, four defensive lineman, two kickers/punters and one fullback and quarterback.

The incoming class also has 38 student/athletes from Minnesota, seven from North Dakota, four from Arizona, and one from Nevada.

"This is also the second straight year we have had several incoming players from outside Minnesota and North Dakota," said Horan. "I am excited to continue to see our recruiting boundaries being stretched. It all comes down to the work of our entire staff. The ability to put in the time and effort to recognize potential student/athletes from all over the country and then follow through with the recruiting process has helped our program immensely."

Concordia kicks off the 2017 season by playing at Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 2 in Lincoln, Neb. Nebraska Wesleyan is now a part of the tradition-rich Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC).

The Cobbers will then return home to host six-time national champion Wis.-Whitewater on Sept. 9. Concordia will begin MIAC play the following weekend when they host Bethel on Sept. 16 as part of the annual Family Weekend celebration.
