Hvidston Makes Cobber History

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/24/12)—For the second straight week Cobber senior linebacker Peter Hvidston was named the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week. Hvidston had an interception and a key fumble recovery in No.24-ranked Concordia's 31-21 streak-stopping win over St. John's on Saturday.

Hvidston becomes the first player in Cobber football history to earn back-to-back MIAC Player of the Week honors. Concordia has now had a player earn MIAC Player of the Week honors for three consecutive weeks. Before Hvidston, Brett Baune was named the Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10.

Hvidston was one of four Concordia defensive players to come away with a team-high five tackles against the Johnnies. His major contribution came in the turnover department where he was responsible for two takeaways. The first turnover was the biggest of the game as he scooped up a fumble at the end of the first half and ran it back 14 yards to put the ball on the St. John's 15-yard line. The Cobbers scored on the very next play to turn a close 17-7 margin into a very comfortable 24-7 halftime lead.

Hvidston then came up with an interception late in the third quarter to help Concordia preserve their lead.

Hvidston was one of the leader behind the Cobber defense that allowed only 26 rushing yards. The CC defense limited SJU to only 155 total offensive yards through the first three quarters of play. St. John's was able to gain 215 yards in the fourth quarter after the outcome had already been determined.

Hvidston continues to be one of the defensive leaders in the MIAC, ranking sixth with 34 total tackles and leading the league in sacks (3.5) and tackles-for-a-loss (six). He is also second in the league in fumbles recovered and interceptions.

Concordia will have a two-week break before returning to play against No.7 ranked Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 6 in Arden Hills.
