Cobbers 5th In Nation In Attendance
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/09/12) -- Concordia finished
fifth in the nation in attendance in NCAA Division III it was
announced by the NCAA last week. The Cobbers drew an average of
4,685 fans for their five home games in 2011. It marks the sixth
time in the past seven seasons Concordia has finished the season
ranked in the top 10 in Division III attendance.
The average of 4,685 fans is the second highest season-ending
total in program history. The Cobbers drew a record-setting 5,441
fans per game in 2007.
Concordia had a total of 23,426 people attend the five home games
during the 2011 campaign. The season-high for attendance came on
Homecoming weekend when the Cobbers drew 5,765 fans for their game
against Augsburg. Concordia drew over 4,000 fans for all five
home games.
The Cobbers also helped the MIAC lead the nation in overall
attendance. In 2011, a total of 168,150 fans attended MIAC
football games. With nine teams and 48 total games, the conference
averaged 3,503 fans per game, which was an increase of 589 fans
from the 2010 average and also tops in the country. In fact, the
MIAC drew more total fans in 2011 than two Division I FCS
conferences and more than seven of the 15 conferences in Division
II.
"The MIAC is proud to lead Division III in football attendance
this season," said MIAC Executive Director Dan McKane. "All the
credit goes to our schools, teams and our dedicated fans. Our
conference values a great game-day experience for all of our
student-athletes, coaches, officials, staff, alumni and fans, and
all of our institutions do a great job hosting football on their
campus each Saturday throughout the fall. We're glad so many people
enjoy MIAC football, and we thank everyone for their continued
loyal support."
In Division III, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference was the
runner up with an average of 3,498 fans per game, and the Ohio
Athletic Conference finished second in total attendance with
134,627. The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association had the
second-highest average increase behind the MIAC at 383 fans per
game. This season, the MIAC was one of just seven Division III
conference to top 100,000 fans, and one of just three to average
more than 3,000 fans per game.
