Crooked-Number Drama

STORY LINE: Concordia rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the top of the ninth inning, tied the game at 7-7 and then scored two runs in the top of the 11th frame and beat St. Mary's 9-7 in Wheaton, Ill. The Cobbers led 3-2 in the sixth before the Cardinals scored five times to take a 7-3 lead. CC then plated four runs on five hits in the ninth. Concordia got a clutch 2-out single from freshman Max Boran which scored two runs to tie the game at 7-7. The Cobbers then scored two unearned runs in the 11th to win the game.

RECORDS: The Cobbers end their 3-game losing streak and even their overall record at 6-6. St. Mary's falls to 6-5.

CROOKED NUMBERS: Concordia scored all nine of its runs in three innings. Besides the 4-run ninth and 2-run 11th, the Cobbers scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead after they allowed a single run in the bottom of the first inning. The 3-run second came courtesy of throwing error, bases loaded walk and then a 2-out single from Billy Lynch.

HIT PARADE: Concordia had 13 hits in the game with 10 players having at least one hit. The 13 base knocks mark the sixth time this season CC has finished with a double-digit hit total. Sean McGuire and Billy Lynch were the only two Cobber players with more than one hit. McGuire went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Lynch was 2-for-5 and drove in two runs. McGuire upped his average to .303 and Lynch is now hitting .400 in his first four games.

BULLPEN TESTED: Concordia used five pitchers in the game. Fletcher Andel started and went the first 5.0 innings. Alex Erickson came on in the sixth inning and was followed by Mitchell Ziebarth, Drew Olsonawski and Drew Thompson. Ziebarth, Olsonawski and Thompson combined to pitch the final 5.1 innings and didn't allow a run. The trio only gave up four hits and two walks. Thompson went the last two innings to earn his first collegiate win.

UP NEXT: Concordia will play host Wheaton (Ill.) at 5 p.m. as part of their 3-game weekend at Wheaton. The Thunder are 8-2 on the season.
