A Road Split At Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/05/18)---Concordia lost a 10-inning nail-biter at Carleton in the first game of their penultimate conference twinbill and then rallied behind the first collegiate home run from Beau Wilmer to earn the split in Northfield.

The Cobbers gave up a single run in the first inning of the first game but then tied the score in the fourth before finally conceding a second run in the bottom of the 10th frame on a two-out single up the middle and falling 2-1. CC then scored seven runs on eight hits in the second game and bounced back to beat the Knights 7-1.

The opener was dominated by the pitchers for both teams as they worked out of two-out jams with each team recording seven hits.

Austin Ver Steeg gave up a lone run in the first but then rolled through 8.0 innings of work. He allowed six hits and struck out seven. Ver Steeg held Carleton to 1-for-11 (.091) with runners in scoring position.

Colin Richards pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up only one hit and fanned two batters.

Concordia got their only run in the fourth when Turner Storm singled home fellow senior Chad Johnson after Johnson reached on an error to start the inning.

The Cobbers had seven different players record hits in Game 1.

Concordia took out their frustration from the opener by scoring three times in the first two innings of play in Game 2. CC would then add three more in fifth to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Wilmer's first collegiate round tripper was responsible for the team's final run of the day as he homered to left field in the top of the seventh.

The Cobbers had eight base knocks in the finale and were led by Wilmer who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Johnson knocked in a pair of runs with a single in the second inning while freshman Sean McGuire came up with his first collegiate hit - a triple to right center that scored a run in the fifth.

Ty Syverson came away with his second straight win as he went the first 6.0 innings and allowed only three hits without giving up an earned run. Fletcher Andel then finished the game off by allowing just one base knock.

SYVERSON'S LATE-SEASON SUCCESS: Ty Syverson has now come up with back-to-back shutout starts. In those two games he has pitched a total of 13.0 innings and allowed seven hits while striking out eight.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: The split at Carleton moves the Cobbers' in a position where they will need to sweep Macalester in the final DH of the regular season in order to secure a playoff spot.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a break for graduation and then head to St. Paul to take on Macalester on Monday, May 7 at 2:30 p.m. The Scots are currently in fifth place in the MIAC standings and have won six of their last eight games.
