Welcome To 100 Chad Johnson

Welcome To 100 Chad Johnson

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/19/18)---It was only a tune-up game before the big conference tripleheader weekend but it turned into another milestone moment for the top two-sport athlete at Concordia.

Senior Chad Johnson entered the Cobbers' game with Mayville State needing only one hit to become the 25th player in program history to reach the 100-hit mark. Johnson waited until the ninth inning to record his historic moment. He laced an opposite field triple that scored Concordia's final run in a 13-5 loss to the Comets.

Johnson follows Cody Rahman as a member of the 100-hit club. Rahman accomplished the feat in the third game of the 2017 season.

Johnson's 100th career hit was the highlight of a game where Concordia was able to get 17 field players at least one plate appearance and had 10 pitchers step on the mound.

The game was close until the fifth inning when Mayville State scored six times to break open a 3-3 tie. The Comets then sealed the win with a 5-spot in seventh frame. Concordia would add single runs in the eighth and ninth to bring the final total to 13-5.

Both teams posted double-digit hit totals. Mayville State came away with a 17-10 edge in base knocks.

The Cobbers had 10 different players collect a single hit in the game. Johnson went 1-for-2 in the game with the one RBI.

Freshman Mason Penske drove in a pair of runs when he reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning and then hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the third inning.

Eric Watt and Nate Leintz had the other RBI for the Cobbers. Watt delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and Leintz came up with a single through the right side in the eighth inning.

Ty Syverson started on the mound for Concordia and pitched the first inning. The Cobbers used the game to give 10 pitchers some game time. CC didn't have a single pitcher go more than 1.0 innings.

WHO'S NEXT: Senior Turner Storm is set to join Johnson in the 100-hit club. Storm went 1-for-2 with a single in the first inning and now has 96 career hits.

NO TIME TO REST: Concordia will now host three conference doubleheaders in the next three days. The Cobbers will square off perennial league power St. Thomas on Friday, Apr. 20 at 9:30 a.m. They will then host Augsburg on Saturday, Apr. 21 at 9:30 a.m. and then St. Olaf on Sunday, Apr. 22 at 3 p.m.
