Final Non-Con Game Nets Experience

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/02/17)--- Concordia used six pitchers and 13 position players in their final non-conference game of the season. The Cobbers gave up multiple-run innings in the first, second and third frames and lost 10-5 to Mayville State.

Concordia was able to give some of their lesser used pitchers and players game time as they prepare for the final MIAC doubleheader of the year. The Cobbers are now 22-15 on the season. Mayville State wins for the fifth straight game and moves to 41-9 for the year.

The first three innings provided all the offense in the game for both teams. The Comets scored three times in the first and second innings and then tacked on four more in the fourth to get to their 10-run total. The Cobbers countered with a single run in the first and then four in the second but then went scoreless for the final six innings of the 9-inning game.

Turner Storm had a two-run single in the second and Joe Hallock and Cody Rahman also added one-run single base knocks in the second frame.

Storm, Hallock and Rahman were three of the four Cobber players who had two hits each in the game. Center fielder Brett Erickson went 2-for-4 as the quartet combined for eight of the team's 13 hits on the day.

Concordia outhit the Comets 13-8 on the day. All 13 of the Cobber base hits on the day were singles. Mayville countered with five doubles and three singles.

The Cobbers had four pitchers combine for 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball from the fourth to the ninth innings. Adam Nibaur and Drew Olsonawski both went 2.0 innings and then handed the baton to Gunnar Linstaedt who pitched a scoreless eighth frame. Storm came on in the ninth and struck out the first two batters he faced and didn't allow a run.

2ND AND 3RD NO BUENO: The second and third innings have been tough on the Cobbers this season. On Tuesday they allowed a combined seven runs in those two innings and lost 10-5. Concordia has given up 27 runs in each of the second and third frames this season which is the most of any frame this year. They are being outscored by a combined total of 54-46 in those two innings.            

6TH AND 7TH MUY BUENO: On the other side of the spectrum the Cobbers have excelled in the sixth and seventh innings of games. Concordia has scored 35 times in the sixth and 29 in the seventh which are the Top 2 run producing frames for the year. CC is outscoring its opponents 64-38 in those innings.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will host a "playoff before the playoffs" doubleheader on Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m. The Cobbers will square off against St. John's in a pair of games that will decide the final spot for the MIAC playoffs. The Cobbers need to sweep the Johnnies to earn the fourth, and final, conference postseason spot while the Johnnies need only to split the DH.
