Carlson Named Academic All-American

MOORHEAD, Minn. (6/01/16)—A career year got even better as senior Tim Carlson (Cumberland, Wis.) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team.

Carlson becomes the first Cobber baseball student/athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. He is also the first Concordia student/athlete since 2012 to achieve the most prestigious Academic All-America honor and is the 19th Concordia student/athlete to claim the award since 2000.

Carlson's Academic All-American honor follows his selection to both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region Teams. Carlson also earned MIAC All-Conference honors.

To become eligible to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors a student/athlete must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The student/athlete has to then be placed on the Academic All-District Team as selected by college sports information directors.

Carlson carried a 3.80 grade point average during his career at Concordia while majoring in biology. Following his graduation on May, Carlson has started working in the medical profession  

A total of 11 baseball players were selected as CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team award winners from a pool 92 Academic All-District honorees. There were three Academic All-America Teams chosen and Carlson was one of only three players from the MIAC to earn Academic All-American honors. He joins St. John's infielder Logan Hershey on the Academic All-America First Team award winner. St. Mary's junior Ben Buerkle was placed on the All-America Third team.

Carlson put up career numbers in almost every statistical category during his fourth season in maroon and gold. He finished the year with a .354 batting average. He had a team-high 52 hits in his 39 games played. Carlson put up a .441 on-base percentage which was helped by 16 bases on balls. He also recorded 15 doubles, two triples and five home runs which gave him 86 total bases for the year and a .585 slugging percentage.  Carlson had at least one hit in 28 of the 39 games and had 16 multiple-hit games. His top hitting output contest of the year came on the team's spring trip to Florida where he went 4-for-4 against Elmira. He also had six three-hit games during 2016.

Carlson played in 118 games in his four-year career in maroon and gold and finished with a .343 batting average. He collected 134 hits which are tied for 10th on the school's all-time hit list. Carlson also had 38 career doubles which is second best in program history.
