Carlson Named Academic All-District

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/05/16)--Concordia designated hitter Tim Carlson (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland HS) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, formerly known as the Capital One Academic All-District Team, is the most prestigious student/athlete academic award. Carlson is now eligible to earn Academic All-American honors.

It is the first time in Carlson's career that he has received Academic All-District honors and he is one of seven student/athletes to win the award this spring.

Carlson graduated from Concordia on May 1. He majored in biology and had a 3.80 grade point average during his four years at the college.

Carlson has started all 36 games for the Cobbers this season and is having a career year for Concordia. He is second on the team in batting average with a .363 mark. He leads the team in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, RBI, doubles, total bases and home runs.

Carlson has had at least one hit in 26 of the 36 games this year and has 15 multiple-hit games. His high water mark came on Feb. 25 when he clouted a career-high four hits in the game against Elmira. It was the third four-hit game of his career.

Carlson is second in the MIAC with 14 doubles. His five home runs are third in the conference.

Carlson is currently 10th on the school's all-time hit list with 131 career base hits. He has also amassed 37 doubles which are just two shy of the school's all-time record.

The Academic All-District team is part of the Academic All-America program, as selected by CoSIDA. Top student-athletes from Division III programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are eligible for inclusion on the District 6 team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams.

This is the fifth year of the expanded Academic All-America program, as CoSIDA has moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I), doubling the number of scholar-athletes honored.

The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members.

The Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2015-16 Division III Academic All-America teams program.
