TITUSVILLE, Fla. (3/02/15)—One streak ended while another streak kept going and a brand new streak might just have started. Concordia lost 10-8 in eight innings in the opener against St. Mary's but then came back to beat the Cardinals 6-2 in the second game.
The Cobbers had their six-game win streak to start the season come to an end but extended its double-digit and extra base streaks and might have just started another win streak.
Concordia had 13 hits against St. Mary's in the first game and then knocked out 12 hits in the second game. The Cobbers have now had at least 10 hits in all eight games this season. In addition, CC had six extra base knocks in the opener and three more in the nightcap and has now had at least two extra base in all eight games.
The first game belonged to the hitters and Cobber offense while pitcher Billy Jacobson and Nate Wendorf put their stamp on the second game.
Concordia fell behind St. Mary's 5-1 in the opener and then rallied with at least one run in six straight innings staring in the third frame. The Cobbers used a leadoff double by Phil Kuball to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the seventh and then took an 8-7 lead in the eighth when Jordan Domine led off with a single, stole second and was eventually brought home on a double play ball. Unfortunately the extra-inning wouldn't last as St. Mary's hit a pinch-hit walk-off three-run home in the bottom of the inning to win the game 10-8.
Jacobson made sure there would be no repeat of an offensive showcase in the second game. He went the first five innings, allowed only one earned run and six hits in picking up his second win of the year. Jacobson was able to pitch out of jams in the first two innings before retiring nine of the final 10 batters he faced. Jacobson stranded two Cardinal runners in each of the first and second innings to keep the Cobbers close.
After allowing two runs in the opening inning, Concordia struck for a single run in the second and then five runs in fourth frame. The multiple-run inning has been a calling card of the Cobber offense this season. Concordia has scored at least three runs in 16 innings this year.
Wendorf then shut the door in the sixth and seventh innings. He allowed only two hits and didn't walk a batter in the final two innings of play.
Nick Bornhauser, who was named the MIAC Player of the Week on Monday, went 3-for-3 in the first game and then didn't play in the finale. Bornhauser drove in three of the team's eight runs and is now hitting a robust .609 on the season.
Kuball and Aaron Green extended their hit streaks to eight games on the day. Kuball had pair of 2-for-4 games against St. Mary's and is now hitting .371 on the year. Green went 2-for-4 in the first game as well but was 1-for-4 in the second contest. He is now hitting .438.
Domine and freshman Chad Johnson had the biggest hits of Game 2. Domine got the Cobbers on the board in the bottom of the second when he hit his second home run of the year. Johnson was a part of the five-run fourth when he smacked a two-run long ball. It was Johnson's second HR of the season and he is now just 3-for-4 on the year with two round trippers and a mere 2.25 slugging percentage.
Concordia will finish off their Florida spring break trip when they play Rose-Hulman (Ind.) on Tuesday, Mar. 3 at 8 a.m.
