Frappier & Rahman Earn MIAC Honors
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/23/12)-- A pair of Cobbers earned MIAC weekly honors it was announced by the league office on Monday. Senior Zach Frappier (Fargo, N.D./Oak Grove HS ) was named the MIAC Pitcher of the Week and sophomore Braden Rahman (Moorhead, Minn.) was named the MIAC Co-Player of the Week.
It is the first time this season that a Cobber player has earned the conference's weekly honor. It is also the first time that either player has won player/pitcher of the week honors.
Frappier and Rahman helped Concordia go 4-1 on the week, which included a sweep of defending MIAC champion Macalester, and get back in the hunt for and MIAC playoff spot. The Cobbers split with Gustavus on Wednesday, beat non-conference opponent Valley City State on Thursday and then swept the Scots on Saturday. Concordia is now 7-7 in conference play and in a tie for fifth place in the league standings. CC is just one game behind fourth place which is the cutoff line for the MIAC postseason tournament.
Frappier pitched a gem in the first game against Macalester on Saturday. He pitched a three-hit, complete game against the Scots. He didn't walk any Macalester hitters in the win, and just one runner reached via error. None of the four Scots to reach advanced past second base, and Frappier enjoyed three 1-2-3 innings. It was the first time Macalester had been shut out in 2012, and just the second time the Scots were blanked in the past two seasons. With the win, the Cobber southpaw improved to 3-5 with a very good 2.25 ERA this season. He has 24 strikeouts against just 12 walks in 48.0 innings of work. His ERA is fourth-best in the MIAC this season, with six complete games in eight starts.
Rahman saved his best for last during the week. In the twinbill against the Scots, he went 5-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored. He also served up the most dramatic hit of the day when he connected on a two-out, walk-off home run in the eighth inning. During the week he hit .500 with a .944 slugging percentage and a .591 on-base percentage with two doubles, two homers and six RBI. Rahman is second in the MIAC in batting (.413) and on-base percentage (.486), fourth in slugging percentage (.620), fifth in hits (38) and home runs (three) and sixth in doubles (10).
Concordia will host a single non-conference game on Tuesday, April 24 when they square off against Dakota Wesleyan at 4 p.m. CC will return to MIAC play when they play Hamline in Moorhead on Saturday, Apr. 28. at 1 p.m.
